At the end of June, the Hunza River in northern Pakistan reached a dangerous level after heavy rains increased the threat of breaching. The Pakistani government has thus far evacuated 45000 displaced residents to 12 camps and asked for international assistance. (In Urdu) Ahmaddin -- Red Crescent Society (M): The situation right now is that the internally displaced persons have the problem of rehabilitation and hopefully there will be a suitable solution for them. VOICE: Deeply concerned, Supreme Master Ching Hai donated US$15000 and asked our Association members to go if possible to provide emergency aid and comfort to the victims. This amount could purchase US$268000 in vital materials if obtained in the United States, based on Pakistan's cost of living. Covering their own travel and related expenses of nearly US$5000, our Association's relief team from Formosa (Taiwan) traveled to the country and with the help of the local groups All Green and the Red Crescent Society were able to bring the most needed items. Nine hundred fifty food supply packages, including high quality rice and oil, were delivered safely via large trucks on rough mountain roads over a distance of 600 kilometers. Tel Aviv, Israel: Giving Antiques New Life
Eighty-year-old doors, gas canisters and old suitcases may be things that aren't of much value to most people. But for one person in Tel Aviv, Israel, they are her canvas for creating unique works out of seemingly mundane objects. Our bureau in Tel Aviv brings us this story. Gorit Megan is an architect by trade. After working at an architectural firm, she knew she had a bigger calling in life. One year ago she opened up her own studio called "Junksion," transforming seemingly old and useless objects into works of art and utility. At her studio there are bicycle parts, empty gas tanks, 80-year-old doors and shutters, closets from the sixties, bathtubs, suitcases and more. She says her biggest joy is searching for antique items at flea markets. The source of her inspiration comes from piles of junk. From a telephone receiver she creates a lamp, and from a suitcase - a living room table. [Gorit Megan, Architect]: "The things that I find have to be pretty on their own, even before I do something with them. There are cases when I see something and I immediately know what I am going to make out of it. The ideas always come from the material itself!" Sustainable Decorating in 2 Minutes: Duke's first green dorm room
Sustainable Duke and three students from the Students for Sustainable Living program collaborated to create Duke's first green dorm room for 2010 summer tours. Funded by a $500 grant from the Duke STARS program, a group that allocates funding to sustainability-related projects at Duke University, the dorm room in Few Quad was furbished with about 20 sustainable items purchased from Whole Foods Market, Target and Etsy.com, a website that sells sustainable goods made by artisans around the world. Biodegradable toiletries and cleaning products, and a power strip that automatically turns off electronics were some items featured in the room. A sign accompanied each product and explained what the item was and how it made the room more sustainable. Some items will also be shown in a Few Quad common room when students arrive on campus in August. In true sustainable fashion, all items will be reused each summer as a highlight of Duke campus tours.

I sat up feeling sad that I had woken from the best dream ever. I also felt like part of me was empty. Like there was a piece missing. Looking over at the photo of Nick Jonas on my bedside table, I sighed. "If only you had realised then how much we should be together" I said softly, picking up the picture. It was at one of their concerts. Nick was looking right at the camara and he had a big smile on his face. I got out of bed and went downstairs to have breakfast, as I could smell pancakes and berrys cooking. After breakfast I went upstairs to get dressed. I pulled on a pair of denim shorts and a light green t-shirt. Thats when I heard a woman yell "Oh be careful Joseph!". I looked out my window to see that the woman had dark curly hair, and the apparent Joseph had short slighty curly hair as well, like it hadn't been straightned. "No way, it couldn't be, could it" I squeled to myself. Grabbing a pair of flip flops and shoving them on my feet I ran outside to the garden to check. Outside was busy. There were a family bringing in boxes, that had "Fragile" printed on them a dozen times, inside, then coming out again to grab another box. But sitting on his own, strumming a guitar, was a guy about my age. He had dark curls and dark eyes to match. I pinched myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming. I wasn't.
